The Physics of Global Warming

How the atmospheric greenhouse effect works in terms of basic physics. Outgoing heat radiation is equal to incoming solar radiation. Most of the solar radiation goes through the atmosphere to warm the Earth's surface but the presence of greenhouse gasses means that the effective radiating surface of the Earth is in the upper atmosphere, and the temperature gradient needed to convect the energy to that level gives us our raised surface temperature compared to an airless body such as the moon.
